red rocks

One of Wellington’s most popular shore dive sections of coast, Red rocks is the complete dive adventure. The unusual rock formation’s known as ‘Red rocks’ were created when an outcrop of ancient volcanic pillow lava was embedded in particular rocks. Abundant with marine life this stretch of coast is perfect for the hunter gatherer or scenic divers. The first bay after the carpark belongs to the TAPUTERANGA marine reserve so the taking of any marine life is against the law, resulting in hefty fines. Please make yourself familiar with where the reserve starts and ends before getting in the water. Any bay after the triangle is fine for a splash. There is a 4WD access track following the coast as you enter through the Red rocks gate. A sturdy 4WD vehicle is recommended otherwise you'll have to walk or bike your gear around. On Sundays, the gate is closed to Vehicles so you'll have to lug your gear if you want a Sunday dive.
